3D Uro-Oncology: How to plan laparoscopic partial nephrectomies?

A 43-year-old male patient, with no history of disease, is diagnosed with renal cortical tumour in the left kidney.




Custom 3D Biomodels

To plan the patient's surgery, three models were made to clearly identify each of the anatomical structures:

  • 3D model of the entire kidney

  • 3D model of the urinary tract with tumour

  • 3D model of the arterial network with the tumour

Characteristics of the biomodels:

◾ FDM technology - Material: PLA

◾ Resolution: 0.2 mm - Finishing: Multiple colours



Surgical plan design and outcomes


In uro-oncology, the use of 3D models provides very important benefits such as reduced ischaemia time and less bleeding (Fan et al., 2019).


In this regard, Dr Richards, who has extensive experience in the implementation of 3D technology, routinely uses it on highly complex patients.


On this occasion, to plan the customised surgery, Dr Richards used the virtual biomodel and three full-scale physical models.



The surgical plan chosen was a laparoscopic left partial nephrectomy.


Thanks to a thorough understanding of the case and detailed planning, the surgery was successfully performed in 90 minutes.


"3D models make surgery faster, more efficient and safer. In selected patients I think it should be a new standard", Dr Richards explains.
